There has been a large increase in the number of colleges and universities in Scotland that offer popular music courses. One of the early adopters of popular music at degree level was Edinburgh Napier University. Napier had always taught classical music through its BMus course, however decided to take a risk and go down the popular music route too. Graham Weir was asked to set-up, what would be, the very first popular music degree course in Scotland. Graham had previously created and managed the NC, HNC and HND Musicianship courses at Jewel & Esk Valley College (Now Edinburgh College). It wasn’t long before other universities followed Edinburgh Napier’s lead. With music being one of the UK’s biggest exports, many senior academics and education policy makers were quick to encouraging the growth of such courses which has led to many new programmes being offered, from the Highlands to the West of Scotland.
