Abide With Me Sheet Music
The well-known song that we know today, ‘Abide With Me’ started off as words to an old hymn that was written back in 1847 by an Anglican minister in County Wexford, Southern Ireland, who went by the name of Henry Francis Lyte. Although Lyte did write notation to go with this hymn, the music which is more commonly used, is from a song called ‘Eventide‘ which was composed 14 years later in 1861 by English organist, Henry William Monk.
This version of the sheet music which is derived from the SATB choral version (Soprano, Alto, Tenor & Bass), expresses great use of harmony and note groupings.

Some tips for practising
- Try practising ‘little and often’ rather than sitting in front of the piano for hours at a time. We tend to remember things when we work in short but frequent bursts.
- Aim to practise a bar at a time. Right hand, then left hand, then hands together. Try to memorise the bar before you move on to the next on.
- Leave the sheet music on your piano. Every time that you walk past the piano, give it a try. Remember, little and often works great!
- Don’t be hard on yourself, give yourself lots of praise.
- Listen to the song on YouTube or Spotify, see how other people play it and sing it.
- Have lessons with a qualified expert music teacher who can help you and keep you on the right musical path.
