Edinburgh Cello Lessons

We teach cello using ABRSM, Trinity and other recognised syllabi. Whether you're aiming for formal qualifications or a relaxed, exam-free experience, our friendly teachers create a supportive environment for students of all ages. The school sits on the main Comiston Road bus route with on-street parking nearby.

Part of the violin family developed in Baroque-era Italy, the cello's warm, resonant range sits closest to the human voice of any string instrument. That's precisely why so many adult learners describe it as an emotionally satisfying instrument to play, even in the earliest stages.

We welcome complete beginners of any age, including a good number of retirees who are picking up an instrument for the first time. The cello is played seated, which many older students find more comfortable than standing string instruments like the violin.

Syllabuses & exam boards for cello

I was looking to get some music back into my life, and thought - why not learn how to play the cello? Never too old to learn! Alistair is very knowledgeable and encouraging, and I very much enjoy my weekly lessons. It's just fun with no pressure. I sometimes bring my toddler along so he can also experience what music lessons are like, and he's allowed to plonk on the piano and proudly showed off his ukulele 'skills' to Alistair.

Is cello suitable to start in retirement?

Yes, it's played seated, which many older beginners find more comfortable than standing instruments, and its warm tone makes early progress genuinely enjoyable to listen to.
