Should I hire or buy a violin?
It depends on your stage: rental violins suit those unsure how much they'll play, student violins suit beginners, intermediate violins suit those who've outgrown a student instrument, and hand-made or custom violins suit advanced players. Our teachers are happy to advise based on your skill level and budget.
What are grades, and should I do them?
Grades are a system, typically 1 through 8, used to benchmark technical ability, musical knowledge and performance by assessing set pieces, scales, sight-reading and music theory. They're a great way to measure progress, though entirely optional.
Can adults realistically learn violin from scratch?
Yes. It has a reputation for being tricky, but with a patient teacher, realistic goals and regular short practice sessions, adult beginners, including many of our retired students, make genuine progress.
What's the best age for a child to start violin lessons?
Many children start violin between the ages of 5 and 7, helped by the fact that violins come in fractional sizes right down to the very smallest. Suzuki-style listen-and-imitate teaching suits younger beginners well. That said, there's no single right age. Readiness, focus and enthusiasm matter more than a birthday, and older children and adults progress quickly too.
What size violin does my child need?
Violins come in fractional sizes (1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4) up to full size (4/4), matched to the length of the child's arm. Getting the right size makes playing far more comfortable and helps good technique from the start. Our teachers will measure and advise at the first lesson, and violins are available to use during lessons.
How much do violin lessons in Edinburgh cost?
Violin lessons are £36 for a half hour and £59 for a full hour, the same rate as every instrument we teach, pay-as-you-go with no contracts or block booking. Violins are available to use during lessons, so you don't need your own to get started.
Can I have online violin lessons?
Yes. We teach live 1-2-1 online violin lessons over Zoom, Google Meet or FaceTime with the same qualified teachers as our in-person lessons in Morningside. Many pupils mix in-person and online lessons to fit around a busy week.
Do you teach fiddle and Scottish traditional playing as well as classical violin?
Yes. The fiddle and the violin are the same instrument. The difference is the style. Our teachers cover classical violin as well as Scottish traditional and folk fiddle, and build lessons around the music you most want to play.
