Sitting a fifth below the violin and tuned C–G–D–A, the viola carries the middle voice of the orchestra: darker, warmer and less hurried than the violin, with a repertoire that rewards players who love rich harmony as much as melody. Reading alto clef feels exotic for about a fortnight; after that it simply feels like home.
Violists are also in famously short supply. Ensembles, community orchestras and chamber groups are far more likely to have a spare desk for a violist than for yet another violinist, which means viola students often find themselves making music with others far sooner than they expect.
Many of our viola students arrive from the violin or from fiddle playing, and the transfer is kind: bowing and left-hand technique carry across, and the differences, the larger instrument, the clef, the sound production, are exactly what a good teacher paces for you. Viola lesson FAQs
What's the difference between the viola and the violin?
The viola is slightly larger, tuned a fifth lower (C–G–D–A), and reads alto clef. Its voice is darker and warmer, sitting in the middle of the string ensemble where the harmony lives. Technique is closely related, which is why violinists often pick it up quickly.
Can I switch to the viola from the violin or fiddle?
Yes, and it's one of the most common routes in. Bowing and left-hand skills transfer directly; your teacher will pace the larger instrument, the wider spacing and the alto clef so the switch feels natural within a few weeks.
Am I too old to start the viola?
Not at all. Adults, including complete beginners, do very well on the viola. One of our current students took it up as an adult and within a year was playing in a community orchestra and chamber groups around Edinburgh.
Can I take graded viola exams?
Yes. ABRSM and Trinity College London both offer full graded viola syllabuses through to Grade 8, and we prepare students for them whenever exams are a goal.
How much do viola lessons cost?
£36 for a half hour and £59 for a full hour, the same rate as every instrument we teach, pay-as-you-go with no contracts or block booking.
