Why a B♭ clarinet sees a different note
Many wind instruments are transposing instruments: their music is written higher or lower than it sounds. When a B♭ clarinet or trumpet plays the note written as D, the note that sounds is a concert C. Choose your instrument above and the tuner shows the note as it is written on your own part, with the concert pitch underneath, so you can compare with a piano or with players of other instruments.
Singers and players should warm up before tuning, and tune to a long, steady note at a comfortable volume. The usual range shown for each voice and instrument is a guide only.
