Trumpet Lessons in Edinburgh

Lessons cover a good variety of repertoire, classical, jazz and popular music, including playing along to film soundtracks such as The Lord of the Rings, with a focus on developing technique and sound. As the trumpet is physically demanding, we suggest a starting age of 9 or 10; a trumpet is supplied for your first trial lesson, though we recommend hiring or buying your own afterwards for hygiene reasons.

For more advanced players, our teacher also conducts a local brass band that students can get involved with, and is happy to accompany you on piano: a valuable part of developing as a musician. For teenagers, we fully understand the National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher music exams, working through both the practical playing and SQA theory past papers.

The trumpet is one of the oldest instrument types, with ancient valveless versions used for signalling in ancient Egypt and Rome, though the modern three-valve trumpet we recognise today only emerged in the early nineteenth century. It remains a cornerstone of orchestras, brass bands, jazz ensembles and function bands across Scotland.

Adult beginners are very welcome, and we regularly work with retirees keen to join a local brass band or simply enjoy playing for themselves, building embouchure strength gradually, at a pace that suits you.

Trumpet lesson FAQs

Can I start the trumpet as a complete beginner?

Yes. Most of our trumpet students begin from scratch, and we cover breathing, posture and embouchure from the very first lesson, at a pace that suits you.

What age can children start trumpet lessons?

We suggest around age nine or ten, once a child has the lung capacity and adult front teeth to form an embouchure comfortably. The cornet is a great lighter starting point for slightly younger players.

How much do trumpet lessons cost?

£36 for a half hour and £59 for a full hour, the same rate as every instrument, pay-as-you-go with no contracts or block booking.

Can I have trumpet lessons online?

Yes. We teach live 1-2-1 online trumpet lessons over video with the same qualified teachers as our in-person lessons in Morningside.
